Wreaths of Interconnection

The first wreath that I ever carved was out of limestone. It was about twenty-four inches in diameter. It came to me after many days of mourning after the attacks of nine-eleven. Months before the event I had intended to carve flowers wrapped in ribbon, creating a stone floral wreath. Instead faces and characters from all cultures and communities began taking shape. I wrapped them in a ribbon made of stone.

The wreath is a symbol of wholeness that I have been partial to for a long time. Recently, in 2018, I was able to find the symbol again in ceramic sculpture. This has been a delight. They have also been a product of what has become a meditation of deep listening and letting go of preconceived ideas. I generally just start with a theme. They shape themselves once I make the form and make room for what needs to be there.
